Circumference Calculator
Calculate the circumference of a circle from its diameter, using C = π × diameter. For round pools, tanks, pipes, and columns.
Circumference is the distance around the outside edge of a circle. It comes up whenever you’re ordering material that wraps around something round — coping for a pool, a strap for a tank, fencing for a circular bed, or trim around a column.
How this calculator works
Every circle has the same fixed relationship between the distance across it and the distance around it. That relationship is pi (π), a number that’s roughly 3.14159 no matter how big or small the circle is. Enter the diameter — the straight-line distance across the circle through its center — and the calculator multiplies it by pi to get the distance around.
Formula: Circumference = π × diameter.
Worked example
A circle 10 ft across (diameter):
- Circumference: π × 10 ≈ 31.42 ft
That’s the total length of material you’d need to go all the way around the outside edge of a 10 ft-diameter circle.
Notes
If you only know the radius rather than the diameter, double it first — radius is the distance from the center to the edge, and diameter is the full distance across, so radius × 2 = diameter.
This same relationship holds no matter what the round object is. A round pool, a tree trunk, a section of pipe, and a column all use the identical formula — the ratio of circumference to diameter is always pi, about 3.14159, regardless of size.
Because pi is constant, doubling the diameter always doubles the circumference. A circle twice as wide has a perimeter exactly twice as long, even though its area grows much faster.
How to use
Measure straight across the widest point of the circle to get the diameter, in whatever unit you’re working in (feet, inches, etc.). Enter that single number and the calculator returns the circumference in the same unit. Use the result directly when ordering coping, fencing, strapping, or trim that needs to wrap around a round shape.
A pure geometry calculation. Always double-check real-world measurements before ordering material.
Frequently asked questions
What's the formula for circumference?
Circumference equals pi times the diameter: C = π × d. Pi is a fixed value, about 3.14159, so once you know the diameter across a circle, multiplying it by pi gives you the distance all the way around the outside edge.
What if I only know the radius, not the diameter?
Double the radius to get the diameter, then multiply by pi. Radius is the distance from the center to the edge; diameter is the full distance across, so radius × 2 = diameter, and diameter × π = circumference.
What's this calculator used for in real projects?
Anywhere you need the perimeter of something round — ordering coping or fencing for a round pool, sizing a strap or band around a tank or pipe, or figuring the wrap length around a column. Enter the diameter and the calculator returns the distance around.
How is circumference different from area?
Circumference is the distance around the outside edge of a circle, measured in linear units like feet. Area is the space inside the circle, measured in square units like square feet. They use different formulas — circumference uses diameter, area uses radius squared.
