How this calculator works
This calculator assumes a standard 4 in × 8 in brick paver, which covers 0.222 square feet per unit — about 4.5 pavers per square foot. It divides your patio or walkway area by that coverage figure to get the paver count, rounding up since pavers are sold as whole units.
Formula: Pavers = Patio/path area (sq ft) ÷ 0.222 sq ft per paver.
Worked example
A 20 ft × 10 ft patio (200 sq ft):
- Pavers: 200 ÷ 0.222 ≈ 900.90 → rounds up to 901 pavers
- At $0.80/paver, that’s $720.80.

How to measure your patio
Measure the full patio or walkway footprint, including a small margin for edge restraints and cuts. For a herringbone or basketweave layout, add extra beyond the standard waste allowance, since angled patterns generate far more cut pieces along the borders than a straight running-bond layout.

A standard 4 in × 8 in clay or concrete brick paver, which covers 0.222 square feet each — roughly 4.5 pavers per square foot. If your brick pavers are a different size, divide your area by their actual footprint instead of using this default.
How much extra should I order for a herringbone or basketweave pattern?
10% or more — angled patterns like herringbone and basketweave require far more edge cuts than a simple running-bond layout, and each cut piece typically wastes the rest of that brick. A straight running-bond pattern along a rectangular patio can often get by with 5%.
Do brick pavers need the same base as standard concrete pavers?
Yes — a compacted gravel base (4-6 in) topped with a 1-inch bedding sand layer is standard prep for brick pavers, identical to what larger concrete pavers require. The smaller unit size doesn't change the structural base needs underneath.
Why do brick pavers need more units than larger concrete pavers for the same area?
Brick pavers are much smaller — 0.222 sq ft each versus 1 sq ft for a standard 12x12 in concrete paver — so covering the same patio takes roughly 4.5 times as many units. That means more labor for the same footprint, but brick's smaller module also gives tighter curves and more intricate pattern options.
Does this count include polymeric sand for the joints?
