How this calculator works

This combines material cost (tonnage of asphalt, from the standard weight-based formula, times your price per ton) with labor (your paved area times a per-square-foot rate). Both price fields are editable — the defaults are national placeholder averages, not local quotes.

Formula: Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) ÷ 27. Tons = Cubic yards × asphalt density. Total cost = (Tons × Price/ton) + (Area sq ft × Labor rate/sq ft).

Worked example

A 40 ft × 12 ft (480 sq ft) paved area at 3 inches, $110/ton material, $2/sq ft labor:

  • Depth in feet: 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
  • Cubic yards: (40 × 12 × 0.25) ÷ 27 ≈ 4.4444 yd³
  • Tons: 4.4444 × 1.9575 ≈ 8.6999 → 8.70 tons
  • Material cost: 8.6999 × $110 ≈ $957.00
  • Labor cost: 480 × $2 = $960.00
  • Total estimated cost: $1,917.00

Cost reference (at default rates)

Paved area Estimated total cost
20 ft × 6 ft ~$479
40 ft × 12 ft ~$1,917
80 ft × 24 ft ~$7,668

How to measure your area

Measure the full length and width of the surface to be paved in feet. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles, calculate each, and sum the results before running this calculator once for the combined total, or run it per section if depths differ.

Frequently asked questions

What's included in this generic paving estimate?

Material cost (tonnage × price per ton) plus labor (area × labor rate) for the asphalt layer itself. Excavation, base prep, and permits aren't included — add them separately if your job needs them.

Why does the labor rate differ between a driveway and a parking lot?

Driveway paving (see the Asphalt Driveway Cost Calculator) typically runs a higher per-square-foot labor rate than large commercial lots, because crews and paving machines are more efficient at scale on a big, open lot than maneuvering equipment through a narrow residential driveway. This generic calculator's $2/sq ft default sits between the two use cases — pick the dedicated driveway or parking lot calculator for a more use-case-specific default.

Why does this show tons instead of cubic yards like the concrete cost calculators?

Asphalt is conventionally priced and delivered by weight, not volume, so this calculator converts your area and depth into tons using asphalt's standard density before applying the price per ton.

What thickness is typical for a general paved surface?

3 inches is a common single-lift default for light-duty paving like driveways and walking paths. Areas that will see regular vehicle traffic often use 3-4 inches, sometimes in two compacted lifts for anything thicker than that.

Does this include a gravel base layer?

No — this estimates the asphalt surface course only. If the site needs a new compacted gravel base underneath, run the Gravel Cost Calculator separately and add that to your total budget.
